School gardens in East Germany (Schulgarten DDR)

In the former East Germany it was part of the curriculum until the 4th grade. So we would have 2 hours per week in our schools garden. (during winter inside) Every school had to have a garden. Fruits and vegetables were sold or we could take them home.

I like the idea of this because 1) It raises awareness and 2) You can make it a physical fun exercise too 3) Connects you with nature. Some kids living in cities may never get the chance to learn, play and understand where food comes from.

Bring it back into the curriculum and make outdoor gardens a requirement in school planning! In fact, let's make competitions in schools where they have to grow the food, create the recipes, cook the food and then get top chefs to travel to schools to taste and judge the food. Look for the healthiest, tastiest food. Scores and wins then go into a school leader-board and becomes a reason for parents to choose those healthy schools!!!
