Build a website, similar to Shelfari with a database of great quality foods. Kids can have their own page. They can add fresh or unusual foods that they have tried, vote on their favorites, invite their friends, answer "should I try this" questions. Describe flavors, smells, textures of different foods etc.
The idea came from shelfari, where you log in and post books that you have read and get ideas about books others have read.
My daughter signed up and it motivates her to read because then she can add the book to her Shelfari page.
In the same way it might encourage pre- teens and teens to try new foods. They can log in and add an artichoke or asparagus to their list of foods. Maybe there is a nutrition facts that comes up with each food. Where and how it is grown. Possibly link to or add a recipe page. I think this would inspire kids everywhere to try new fruits and veggies that they otherwise had never heard of.
There might even be links to local food sources, farmers markets etc. on when these foods are in season.
If it was localized maybe there could be a food fair or social so that the participants could meet up, organize community gardens, or just try foods. (With parental supervision of course).
